Riverside Transport Museum...

After a very full first day in Glasgow, our second day did not disappoint! In the morning, Mom and I walked into town to change currency and browse a bit. We were back at Shirley's place before lunch, and then Candace and the kiddos joined us, and we walked down the road to the West Street tube station (pictured here as we wait on the platform). Here we caught the Underground to Partick station - from where we walked the short distance to the Riverside Museum.

This is one of the many free museums throughout Glasgow, and it was absolutely fascinating. It chronicles the history of transportation within Glasgow and the world, and has many exhibits featuring cars, model ships (pictured here), trains, toys, bicycles, and much, much more! There is even a massive steam locomotive that was built in Glasgow but served in South Africa for over 40 years.

My favourite part of the museum was the steel barque, the Glenlee, one of only two square-rigged cargo vessels left in the UK. (The other one is the clipper ship, Cutty Sark.) Candace, Riaan, Anya, and myself all toured the vessel, while mom and Eliza spent some quality time on the dock. :)

The children had a wonderful time at this museum, enjoying seeing all the different types of transportation on display. We also shared a late lunch at the museum's cafe - I finally ate proper fish and chips in the UK again! But as the clouds darkened and the afternoon wore on, it was clearly time to head back to Shirl and Montassir's home.

The children were excited to have their first Underground train ride!
Entering the museum.
Distorted reflections.
Riaan poses in front of an antique fire engine.
Old steam engine. Similar to what Candace's grandpa Paulus used to own.
A horse-drawn tram.
Amazingly detailed section recreating early 1900s Glasgow.
A tiny part of the museum. Those are bikes all around the wheel at the top.
The Flying Scot bicycle display.
Penny-farthing display.
Forget A Bicycle Made for Two; how about one made for four?!
Yep, much cheaper to cycle!
Possibly the world's oldest bicycle.
Antique toys... including Meccano!
Our three kiddos loved the antique toy section!
Another intricate model ship. This is the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth. They also had models of the QE2 and the Queen Mary.
The beautiful Tall Ship Glenlee.
Walking along the deck of this special vessel.
The interior was beautiful, too.
Riaan tries his hand at the ship's wheel.
It's called a Tall Ship for a reason. :)
Granny and Eliza share special moments on the dock.

Old vehicles along the side of the museum.
Anya is a very skilled firefighter...
As are Riaan and Eliza!
Another antique fire engine.
Mom poses in front of a Mini. Her first car was a Mini.
Riaan and Eliza try their best not to crash with this fun driving game.
We all gave it a go - including Mom and myself. Let's just say I left lots of room for improvement!

Walking back to the tube station after a full day!
