Variegated Fritillary...

This little chap was flitting around our chopped-down sunflowers recently. It is a variegated fritillary and this was the first time I've identified this small species in our garden. I usually assumed that the smaller dark butterflies were all just painted lady butterflies, but there are actually some clear differences. I'm going to try and do a better job with my insect identification from now on!

Resting on the root of our maple tree.
This is an older specimen, since its colour has faded and the wings are rather tatty.
